FAQs
What is Cerium Oxide?
Cerium oxide is a rare earth mineral and the industry-standard polishing compound for glass restoration. It chemically reacts with glass at a microscopic level, smoothing imperfections and restoring clarity. This process effectively removes scratches, sanding marks, haziness, water spots, and limescale, making it a top choice for automotive, household, and industrial glass restoration.
What’s the Difference Between High and Fine Grade Cerium Oxide?
- High-Grade Cerium Oxide (3.5 microns, 85% TREO) is slightly coarser, making it ideal for general glass restoration where a stronger cutting action is needed.
- Fine-Grade Cerium Oxide (2.5 microns, 95% TREO) is more refined and best suited for optical lenses, high-end glassware, and gemstone polishing.
Can Cerium Oxide Damage My Glass?
No, cerium oxide is safe for all glass types when used correctly. It polishes without scratching, but improper use—such as excessive pressure or using the wrong tools—can lead to unwanted results.
What Types of Glass Can I Use This On?
- Car windshields & windows
- Shower doors & glass tabletops
- Mirrors & household glass
- Aquariums & boat windows
- Tempered & laminated glass
Does This Work on Deep Scratches?
High-grade cerium oxide is best for fine to moderate scratches. If a scratch catches your fingernail, it may require abrasive sanding before polishing for the best results.
How Do I Use High-Grade Cerium Oxide?
- Mix cerium oxide powder with water to create a smooth paste.
- Apply with a felt polishing pad on the surface.
- Polish using a rotary tool or drill at 1500–2500 RPM, keeping the glass temperature 30–50°C (86–122°F).
- Work in sections, keeping the pad moving over the surface. Repeat the process as needed until the Damage is no longer visible.
- Clean the glass thoroughly after polishing to remove any residue.
Can I Use This on Gemstones or Crystals?
Yes! High-Grade Cerium Oxide can be used on harder stones and certain crystals. When applied by hand, it helps clean and restore clarity. When used with a rotary device, it can enhance the polish and remove surface imperfections, making it suitable for quartz, tourmaline, and other durable gemstones and crystals. However, for fine or delicate gemstone work, Fine-Grade Cerium Oxide is recommended for a more refined finish.
Do I Need Special Equipment to Use This?
For best results, use a rotary tool or drill with a felt polishing pad. Hand application can clean glass but will not effectively remove scratches.
Is This Safe to Use Indoors?
Yes! Our non-toxic, zinc-free formula is safe for indoor use. However, we recommend using gloves and a dust mask when handling fine powders.
How Much Cerium Oxide Do I Need?
The required amount depends on your project size:
- 50g (1.76 oz) → Polishes up to 4m², enough for at least 2 windshields or large glass panels
- 100g (3.52 oz) → Ideal for multiple glass surfaces, aquariums, or repeated use
- 250g (8.8 oz) → Suitable for larger restoration projects or professionals
- 1kg (2.2 lbs) → Best for bulk use, workshops, or industrial applications
